Ambassador Koru’s Message On The Occasion Of The Day Of Democracy And National Unity, 15 July
AMBASSADOR KORU’S MESSAGE ON THE OCCASION OF THE DAY OF DEMOCRACY AND NATIONAL UNITY, 15 JULY
On 15 July 2016, Turkey witnessed the worst act of terror in its history. Treacherous coup plotters hiding in the military, linked to the Fethullah Gülen Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), attempted to overthrow the Government and to assassinate the President, and bombed the Parliament. Using fighter jets, tanks and heavy weapons, they took the lives of 250 civilians and security officers, leaving more than 2.000 people wounded.
The people of Turkey swiftly reacted in unison to defend their freedom, democracy, government and state. They took to the streets, condemning the indiscriminate violence and heinous aims of the coup plotters. People of Turkey from all backgrounds and political views resisted and displayed a historic example of solidarity and bravery as they stood selflessly in front of the tanks.
As we commemorate the first anniversary of the thwarted coup attempt, on the “Day of Democracy and National Unity”, we honour the Turkish nation’s victory and express our gratitude and blessing to our martyrs and veterans of 15 July.
One year on, we are still in the process of overcoming the trauma of this existential threat that targeted the very foundations of our state. It was a trial of strength and perseverance for the Turkish democracy and the State. It makes us proud to have passed this test. Since the thwarted plot, the Government has been taking necessary and proportionate measures to suppress and eventually defeat this imminent threat in line with our international obligations.
Turkey continues its cooperation in a spirit of constructive dialogue with all relevant international mechanisms, including the UN, Council of Europe and the OSCE. In these critical times, we count on the continued support and encouragement from our friends.
