ID with the Commission of Inquiry on Syria
We categorically reject the futile and deceptive allegations made by the Syrian regime’s representative in toto. We condemn such pathetic attempts to distort reality.
We thank the distinguished members of the Commission of Inquiry for their report. It constitutes yet another proof of the Syrian regimes’ crimes.
The regime continues targeting the entire Syrian people by different ways and means as a method of combat. As stated in the report, these attacks are indiscriminate and disproportionate, but moreover, they are deliberate. The aerial bombings of hospitals, schools and market places, even of IDP camps continue to claim numerous lives.
The besiegement and “starve or surrender” policy of the regime reached new heights. The besiegements of Aleppo and Al Waer, as well as many other Syrian towns, are clear signs that the regime is looking for a military solution.
The UN Joint Investigation Mechanism recently confirmed that the Syrian regime is responsible for the use of chemical weapons in at least two cases, which is both, war crime and a crime against humanity. The regime has the same mind-set as DAESH, which also used chemical weapons.
DAESH constitutes an enormous threat to the region and beyond. Terror is our common enemy and Turkey’s determination to fight terrorism remains firm.
We also would like to draw attention to serious human right violations committed by YPG, which deserve a more detailed and separate investigation by the CoI. YPG’s acts, such as trying to change demographics and kidnapping local Kurdish politicians may lead to the disintegration of Syria.
Turkey welcomed the ceasefire arrangement announced on September 10. We supported all efforts for this arrangement and implementation remains the key issue. Still, the Syrian regime, despite relevant UN Security Council resolutions and ISSG statements, is continuing to block unimpeded humanitarian access.
Turkey is convinced that success can only be achieved through a genuine political transition. Hence, the focus must remain on the implementation of the Geneva Communique, emphasizing the establishment of an inclusive transitional governing body with full executive powers.
I thank you.
