UN Human Rights Council 27th Session, “Panel Discussion on the Human Rights Situation in South Sudan”

Mehmet Ferden ÇARIKÇI 24.09.2014
Mr. Chairman,

We would like to thank the distinguished panelists for their valuable insights regarding the human rights situation in South Sudan and their work on the field. By this vein, we would like welcome H.E Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan.

We would also like to welcome Ms. Ellen Margrethe Loj and wish her success at her mandate as the Special Representative of the Secretary General for UNMISS.

Regrettably, the newest member of international community South Sudan faces enormous challenges in both political and economic spheres. Humanitarian situation still remains fragile.

We are concerned about the continuing violence in many parts of South Sudan which flared up since the middle of December last year and the ensuing tension in the region. This situation unfortunately resulted in dire consequences for so many civilians.

It will certainly require some time to find solutions to these problems. National reconciliation and political stability will surely guide South Sudan in the right direction. We are pleased to see that despite the difficult period of last six months, there is now a strong determination for compromise. We are sure that South Sudan will find a quick exit to the current impasse.

In this regard, we welcome the Agreement on cessation of hostilities signed in Addis Ababa in January and later in May this year.

We commend Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) mediation efforts of which Turkey financially contributed in January 2014. We recommend the international community to contribute IGAD mediation efforts along the same lines.

Turkey will continue its engagement with South Sudan for development and reconciliation and exert every effort in order to alleviate dire humanitarian situation in South Sudan.

Thank you.
