INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE WITH THE COMMISSION OF INQUIRY ON SYRIA
Distinguished members of the Commission of Inquiry,
We have carefully read your report. The conflict in Syria has entered its fifth year and the findings stated in your report show us that the situation remains devastating since the human cost of the ongoing conflict is immeasurable. It is a direct threat to the entire region’s peace and stability.
The numbers of killed and displaced Syrians speak for themselves. The regime continues its attacks on populated areas, medical facilities, schools and mosques, targeting the entire Syrian people.
DEASH poses a tremendous threat. To deal with it, we must address the reason why DEASH emerged in the first place. There is no viable way to solve the DEASH issue without addressing the root causes of the conflict in Syria first.
After the episode of chemical weapons this time Assad plays on the fear of terrorism. He thinks he can be a partner in the fight against DEASH. Let’s be clear about it: There is no place for Assad within the family of civilized nations. Moreover, we totally reject the baseless allegations of his representative a few minutes ago.
Turkey’s stance towards the humanitarian situation in Syria and its solid contribution to the efforts in extending a helping hand to the Syrian people are well known. The international community should also honor its obligations in terms of burden and responsibility sharing.
A genuine political transformation based on the full implementation of the Geneva Communiqué must remain the key priority. Stability in Syria can only be reinstated by a new government to be formed in accordance with the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.
The international community bears equal responsibility for putting an end to the suffering of the Syrian people, within and outside Syria. If the international community fails ensuring the Syrian peoples “right to life”, its own credibility will be eroded.
