HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL 28™ SESSION AGENDA ITEM 3 GENERAL DEBATE Intervention by Turkey
I wish to explain our views on the matters subject to the joint statement entitled “Supporting the Human Rights of Christians and Other Communities, particularly in the Middle East”,
Terrorism and extremist violence is not solely a Middle Eastern problem, but a contagious global phenomenon. The atrocities of Boko Haram in Nigeria, of A1 Shabab in Somalia, the odious attacks against Charlie Hebdo and in Copenhagen all need to be condemned equally and should be taken as examples of the horrific reality that radicalism has spread to, and found acceptance in the ill-minds around the globe.
The international community should focus its efforts on combatting radicalization on the global scale, Religious education based on the ideas of tolerance, respect and other noble values of humanity is a must Education of the educators on these foundations is crucial in providing a healthy environment for future generations.
Terrorism has no religion, nationality or any values that it can represent. It is a crime against humanity and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Without addressing the root causes of DEASH, selectively focusing on the situation of specific groups, namely the non-Muslims of the region will be denying that the vast majority of DEASH's victims are fellow Muslims. As a matter of fact, we strongly reject the categorization of the terror victims by their ethnic and religious backgrounds. On our part, we pursue an open door policy towards all those people fleeing to save their lives, regardless of their ethnic and religious identities, but on ourcommon denominator of humanity.
What we need is not “peaceful coexistence” as during the Cold War era, but living together in harmony.
We can make a difference if this threat is tackled by all of us within a holistic and strategic approach, with a constructive mentality and on a common ground like Alliance of Civilizations. This will serve peace and stability for the whole world.
We are fully convinced that our common interest remains in sending a just, inclusive, unifying and even-handed message from this august body.
I thank you Mr. President.
