INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE WITH THE COMMISSION OF INQUIRY ON SYRIA
Firstly, we entirely reject the baseless accusations made by the Syrian regime’s representative. We condemn such shameless and useless attempts to detract from their cruel acts of violence.
We thank the Commission of Inquiry for their presentation. We are deeply concerned about the findings in the report, which also contains some important recommendations that deserve attention, especially those regarding the humanitarian situation on the ground. Let us be clear, the humanitarian reality has to find its way into the international decision making process. Half-hearted political steps are not enough anymore.
Syria has become a broken country in the hands of a ruthless regime. More than 300 thousand people have lost their lives. Half the population is displaced. The economy and infrastructure are in ruins. The Syrian people are suffering and the situation is not sustainable.
As a method of combat the regime is targeting the entire Syrian people by different ways and means, including chemical weapons. It has to be held accountable for its crimes against humanity. As long as Assad stays in power, Syria will remain in this vicious cycle.
We have to keep in mind that the regime has always been collaborating with DEASH and is the root cause of its emergence. Therefore, the regime cannot be a partner in the fight against terrorism.
Regarding the fight against DEASH, the report touches in a rather misleading manner upon the role of PYD. Its fight against DEASH as a tactical measure cannot hide widespread human rights violations committed by PYD. Crucially, it plays with local demographics, taking advantage of the situation on the ground. PYD’s agenda and motives will threaten the territorial integrity and political unity of Syria.
Only a political transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people will enable them to determine their future independently and democratically. In this regard, the implementation of the Geneva Communique, including the establishment of an inclusive transitional governing body with full executive powers, is the sole way forward.
I thank you.
