HRC 30th SESSION Item 7 – General Debate

Mehmet Ferden ÇARIKÇI 28.09.2015

Mr. President,

The occupation is in its 48th year. Despite all the efforts by the international community towards a two state solution, the expansion of settlements continue. This constitutes in all terms a contradiction to efforts in view of finding a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel should leave illegal practices aside and engage with the peace process in a sincere and result oriented manner.

Recently, there has been a significant rise in Israeli practices aiming towards a temporal and spatial division of Haram Al-Sharif, much like we see in the Ibrahimi Mosque in Al-Khalil. We are deeply concerned about this developments and strongly condemn the intrusion of the Israeli security forces into Haram Al-Sharif two weeks ago. These violations must stop.

The inhumane blockade on Gaza worsens the already dire humanitarian situation. Turkey pledged 200 million US Dollars for the period of 2015-2017. We also expect the international community to fulfil its responsibility to end the acute humanitarian crisis, particularly in Gaza.

We find hope, as Palestine’s just cause has been once again confirmed at global scale through the UN General Assembly vote on raising the Palestinian flag at the UN headquarters. Today, the number of countries recognizing Palestine has reached 137.

We also observe a positive trend in Europe towards the recognition of the State of Palestine, which is a step in the right direction. We urge all, who have not done so yet, to follow suit.

The realization of the two-state peace vision in accordance with international law, relevant UN resolutions and Arab Peace Initiative is the only viable way forward. This vision requires first and foremost the establishment of a sovereign, independent and contiguous Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side in peace and security with the State of Israel.

I thank you.

Atatürk
