ID ON THE HIGH COMMISSIONER'S UPDATE ON UKRAINE
We thank the Assistant Secretary-General for his detailed update.
One year has passed since the signing of the Minsk Agreements, which remain the key step forward towards peace and stability. We are convinced that full and unconditional adherence to these Agreements by all is the only way to ensure a peaceful and lasting settlement, while respecting the country's territorial integrity, including Crimea, as well as its independence, sovereignty and political unity. To this end, we expect the provisions of the Minsk Package of Measures to be implemented faithfully.
Turkey commends dedicated efforts of the OHCHR regarding the human rights situation in Ukraine. In particular, we highly value the work of the UN Human Rights Mission as a critical mechanism to monitor and document developments on the ground, while assisting the Government of Ukraine. Its regular reports play a crucial role in keeping track of various violations of human rights. Also, we encourage the High Commissioner to continue his practice of timely and swiftly responding to recurring violations.
We remain deeply concerned by the ongoing human rights violations and abuses in eastern Ukraine and in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, which we consider an inalienable part of Ukraine. The rights of minority groups in Crimea, particularly of the Crimean Tatars, are still at stake. Above all, several cases of intimidation and prolonged pre-trial detention, sheer absence of fair trial and due process, repressive media controls, restrictions to freedom of expression and to peaceful assembly are thoroughly reported by the UN Mission. Turkey reiterates its call to respect basic human rights and freedoms of the Crimean Tatars.
We stand ready to further contribute to international efforts in Ukraine in the period ahead. In this vein, protection of human rights and ensuring accountability will be the basis for long-term justice and peaceful stability.
I thank you, Mr. President.
