Oral Update by the High Commissioner for Human Rights on Myanmar
Madam Vice President,
We thank the Deputy High Commissioner and the Assistant Secretary General for their oral updates yesterday.
Regarding the human rights situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar it is our strong desire that the Government of Myanmar respects human rights and fundamental freedoms of its people, regardless of their race and religion. We encourage the Government of Myanmar to ensure the security and the protection of the basic rights and well-being of all people in the Rakhine State.
In view of the upcoming elections, we are seriously concerned about the deprivation of the Rohingyas of their right to vote in the election by means of a series of administrative and legal arrangements. One of the basic human rights, the right to vote, should not be undermined and necessary steps for granting full citizenship rights to Rohingya Muslims should be taken.
Furthermore, more than 100.000 Muslims in Rakhine State continue to live in IDP camps for the last three years. More than a million Rohingya in Rakhine State continue to confront restrictions. All this is resulting in their perilous migration in the Andaman Sea through the exploitation of criminal rings. Taking into consideration the tragedy that such movements of people may restart and the risks that IDP’s are facing in that area, we sincerely call upon the Government of Myanmar to find a durable solution for displaced people.
While Turkey supports recent efforts of the Government regarding the settlement of some of the Muslim IDP’s, in cooperation with the international community, we would like to underline the importance of the return of IDP’s to their place of origin as well as their return to normal living conditions.
Finally, Turkey firmly believes in the policy of dialogue and cooperation. It is our hope that in November credible, transparent and inclusive parliamentary elections will be held, aiming to mark a turning point for an inclusive and strengthened democracy in Myanmar.
