Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Mehmet Ferden Çarıkçı on the occasion of the signing ceremony of the 26th World Postal Congress Host Country Agreement
Mr. Director General,
It is always a great pleasure for me to visit the Universal Postal Union which has a special significance for Turkey, not only because of the important issues it covers but also because Turkey is one of the founding members of this second oldest international organisation in the world.
In spite of the fact that the post is the oldest medium of communication, UPU has a rich history of transformation and the postal sector is in a continuous effort to adapt itself to the technological developments and maintaining its rightful place in the world market. Turkey has always been and will continue to be a strong and active supporter of the UPU against the challenges it faces.
Our decision to host the Twenty-Sixth Universal Postal Congress in İstanbul is a reflection of this support and I would like to thank the member countries once again for their trust.
Today, with the signing of the Host Country Agreement, we left behind an important phase towards the organisation of the Twenty-Sixth Universal Postal Congress and also we reflected on the paper the already existing close cooperation between Turkey and the International Bureau in this regard. The presence of the Member of Board of the Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Authority and Head of Turkish Post - PTT shows the importance we attach to the successful organisation of the Congress.
Turkey has a vast experience in the organisation of international meetings, many of which were of historic importance. As you know, Turkey assumed the G20 Presidency on the 1st of December, 2014 with the theme “Collective Action for Inclusive and Robust Growth” and our Presidency will culminate in the Antalya Summit at the end of this week. Our G20 priorities were formulated as the three I’s: Inclusiveness, Implementation and Investment. During our presidency, we have promoted support to low income developing countries (LIDCs) and Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) as cross cutting themes taken up under various G20 work streams. And we have pursued an intense agenda and work plan with many international meetings, which have paved the way towards achieving the overarching aim of the G20: strong, sustainable and balanced growth.
The Twenty-Sixth Universal Postal Congress will also be an important gathering in many aspects, particularly with regard to the draft İstanbul World Postal Strategy for 2017–2020, which identifies postal industry reform as the key driver for the future.
It goes without saying that, İstanbul, a city that has witnessed many decisive moments throughout the history, looks forward to welcoming all the delegates to the Congress with its charm next year.
