ID with the Commission of Inquiry on Syria

Mehmet Ferden ÇARIKÇI 15.03.2016

Mr. President,

We firmly reject the baseless allegations made by the Syrian regime’s representative in toto. We condemn such persistent and useless attempts to detract from their cruel acts of violence.

We thank the distinguished members of the Commission of Inquiry for their report. We are deeply concerned about its findings. As the conflict in Syria enters its sixth year, the human rights situation continues to deteriorate, further aggravated by the involvement of outside forces and groups.

So far 400.000 people lost their lives. Approximately 12 million have been displaced. More than 4.5 million Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring countries.

As laid out in the report, the regime is targeting the entire Syrian people by different ways and means as a method of combat and has to be held accountable for its crimes against humanity. Moreover, the country has become a playground for terrorists due to the collaboration of the regime. As long as Assad stays in power, Syria will remain in this vicious cycle.

We also would like to draw attention to human rights violations committed by YPG/PYD with the help of the regime. In addition to forced displacements in northern Syria, YPG/PYD uses the fight against DEASH as a pretext to unlawfully detain and unfairly try civilians and exploit children as fighters.

In conclusion, Turkey is of the firm conviction that there is no alternative to a political solution. The two task forces created by the ISSG in Geneva are yet to achieve critical mass and deliver satisfactory results in spite of the regime’s sinister tactics to extend Esad’s time in Damascus. We strongly support the Special Envoy’s efforts and the resumption of the intra Syrian talks.

Success can only be achieved through a genuine political transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, enabling them to determine their future independently and democratically. The focus must remain on the implementation of the Geneva Communique, emphasizing the establishment of an inclusive transitional governing body with full executive powers.

I thank you.
