Item 7 General Debate
The occupation is in its 49th year. Despite all the efforts to find a political solution, Israel continues with its practices that are in all terms diminishing prospects for peace and are also increasing the tension in the whole region. We call upon Israel to engage with the peace process in a sincere and result oriented manner.
We are following with great concern the escalation that started with the entry of Israeli security forces into Al-Haram Al-Sharif. The loss of life increases day by day since the beginning of October last year. There is a significant increase in the number of settlers that are allowed to enter Al-Haram Al-Sharif. These groups are well known for their desire to change by force the historical Islamic character of the compound, despite warnings from all over the world.
The Palestinian flag found its noble place in the UN among the flags of other nations of the world. The number of countries recognizing the State of Palestine has reached 137. Nevertheless, its existence is increasingly challenged on the ground by the occupation. Palestinian people urgently need a solid perspective for a brighter future.
Especially Gaza urgently needs reconstruction. To avoid a humanitarian disaster which would affect the entire region there is the crucial need to invest in water management and power generation as well as creating new employment areas until 2020. Turkey is building an industrial zone in Jenin and has pledged 200 Million USD for the period of 2015-2017. We will continue our development assistance and reconstruction projects with the aim to improve living conditions.
Furthermore, we also will resolutely carry out all efforts for a just, lasting and comprehensive settlement. Turkey firmly believes that the realization of the two-state peace vision in accordance with international law, relevant UN resolutions and Arab Peace Initiative is the only viable way forward. This vision requires first and foremost the establishment of a sovereign, independent and contiguous Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side in peace and security with the State of Israel.
I thank you.
