STATEMENT BY TURKEY MEMBER STATES BRIEFING ON THE WORLD HUMANITARIAN SUMMIT

Berk Baran 01.04.2015

Mr. Chair,

As the host of the World Humanitarian Summit, we would like to express our gratitude to all actors who make valuable contributions to the preparatory process. We especially thank the Governments who host the regional and global consultations.

Also, on every occasion, we express our appreciation to the Secretariat and its dedicated staff successfully led by JemilahMahmood.

In this process, we tirelessly ask questions to the Secretariat, be them about the process or about the substance. And the Secretariat is kindly telling us that it is up to us, not only as Governments, but as stakeholders, to shape the process and to reshape aid.

The regional consultations are about to end in several months. Now, Geneva is preparing to host the first and last global step of the preparatory process. It is hightime for every one of us to use this unique opportunity, to participate, raise our voices and have our ideas registered among the recommendations of the Summit.

While doing this, we should keep in mind the reasons why the UN Secretary General had to come up with this initiative. The system needs to be reshaped. We have to be more effective and capable in meeting the increasing needs of millions of people affected by disasters andconflicts.

If we are not bold in this process, then we should not complain if the Summit process does not bring bold recommendations. In this case, we should also be aware of the possible frustration such a result would create in the affected people, who have high expectations from the Summit and who are already active participants of the preparatory process.

With this understanding, Turkey will continue to actively support the preparations of the Global Consultations. We take this opportunity to ask everyone, to endorse the initiative of the UNSecretary General.

Thank you.

Atatürk
