HRC 29th SESSION Item 7 - General Debate
There is an urgent need more than ever to find a negotiated political settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on two states; living side by side in peace and security.
The realization of the two state vision in accordance with international law, relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative should not be hampered further due to the practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian territory in contravention of international law.
Instead of creating facts on the ground by illegal practices, Israel should engage with the peace process in a sincere and result oriented manner.
The trend in Europe toward the recognition of the State of Palestine is a reflection of such a frustration by the international community. We urge all others who have not done so yet, to follow suit.
Moreover, the international community on its part has to step up its efforts for the establishment of a just., comprehensive and lasting peace, which will pave the way for a sovereign, independent and contiguous Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The initiative of the Palestinian President Abbas for a Security Council resolution aimed at ending the occupation within a reasonable time frame and achieving the two-state solution deserves the support of the international community. We are disappointed by the Council’s rejection of such a resolution at the end of last year, and hope that it will soon assume its responsibility.
We are fully aware of the dire humanitarian situation in Palestine, especially in the Gaza Strip, which has even worsened by the latest Israeli military operation. Turkey pledged 200 million US Dollars for the period of 2015-17 and will continue its unwavering support to the Palestinian people. We also expect the international community to fulfill its responsibility to end the acute humanitarian crisis, particularly in Gaza.
I thank you.
